The Marine Corps Reserve is the main sponsor of the Toys For Tots charity, which collects toys unwrapped, then wraps them and plays Santa by giving children who would not otherwise receive a toy on Christmas. Toys for Tots began as a Los Angeles charitable effort in 1947. Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, was inspired by his wife Diane when she tried to donate a homemade Raggedy Ann doll to a needy child but could find any organization to do so. In 1980 the charity began only accepting new toys, as the refurbishing of the used toys was becoming to be more than the volunteers could handle.
