Casey Anthony was the most hated woman in America as her trial for murdering her young daughter dragged on, eventually ending in an acquittal that shook the world. But after the dust settled, and the cameras are turned off, what happened to the accused child killer?
#1 Casey Anthony Scandal
Casey Anthony's trial was one of the most hotly contested and heavily followed since the OJ Simpson case, and with good reason. It featured an attractive, young, female defendant with an allegedly colorful history; a beautiful child whose life ended in tragedy; and a slew of scandals, from rumors of incest to the alleged murder itself.
#2 The Most Hated Women In America
The trial and onslaught of media attention, mainly from cable news outlets and hosts like Nancy Grace, made her the most hated woman in America, and several tabloids published headlines exclaiming so! But Casey was finally acquitted in 2011 and her release from prison caused numerous protests and a media frenzy that has since died down. But where is she today?
#3 She's Broke
"She can't hold a real jobShe's got enough money to live, but not enough to really do anything," a source said. "She sort of lives like an old person, on a fixed income without much going on in her life." Apparently, she doesn't have much money coming in and lives off of her legal team and a few supporters.
#4 Filed For Bankruptcy
Anthony reportedly filed for bankruptcy in 2013, claiming $1,084 in assets and more than $792,000 in debts. The bankruptcy was discharged in 2015 and she listed $474 in assets and $200 worth of jewelry.
#5 Living With Her Lawyer In West Palm Beach
As of early 2016, she was still living in South Florida with her attorney, Cheney Mason, who is supporting her financially. She acts as his live-in housekeeper and does things like filing, clerical work, and bookkeeping.
#6 She Has Male Followers
Despite her crying about her lack of income, reports say that she is living pretty comfortably in Mason' home and has several benefactors that are enamored with her and send her things. Between the guys who claim to be in love with the accused child murderer, and her living situation, she actually has no worries, according to People magazine.
#7 She Tried To Get A Publishing Deal
Casey tried to get a book deal in 2013 and then again in 2015, but no publisher would touch the project. Sources say that she and a "representative" went to St. Martin's Press about a potential deal in 2013 claiming that she had been keeping journals and wanted to write a book to get her side of the story out to the public.
#8 Publishers Said She Was Toxic
The book deal did not go as expected, and she tried again in 2015 with her attorney, Mr. Mason. However, sources say, "It's unlikely that Casey will have to submit a book proposal and her lawyer, Cheney Mason, has been in discussions with several different publishers, although the response from most has been lukewarm at best. The big publishing houses fear the backlash from the public and aren't lining up to sign Casey."
A publishing source echoed to People, "She's toxic. No one wants to publish her book and be boycotted."
#9 Estranged From Entire Family
People also reported that Casey is estranged from her entire family as of 2014. She has spoken with her parents, George and Cindy, a few times but was absent from her brother Lee's wedding in 2012, and that part of their estrangement is from her team's assertion that he molested her when they were children. Her father told the Today Show that she has a safety net in her legal team and lives in a bubble, not accountable for her life or actions. He claims that's how she ended up where she is to begin with, and both parents agreed that they do not feel any sorrow for their daughter.
#10 Tried To Open Photography Business
In an attempt to get some extra cash and keep busy, Casey tried starting her own photography business. But that, Case Photography, is registered to a private investigator who works for Mason's team, detective Pat McKenna.
#11 Business Was Slow
Unfortunately for Anthony, angry followers of her trial who were outraged at her not-guilty verdict reportedly bombarded all of her social media for her business with negative reviews and harassment. A source told People that Anthony has had very few projects, though she is often seen around with a camera in hand. The business, Case Photography is no longer listed as active in the state of Florida.
#12 Living As A Recluse?
According to reports, she is now living her life as a recluse. She has no outside activities except for a few dates that she goes out on that her legal team sets up. She has, however, been spotted out at local pubs with friends of both sexes in the last 12 months. There are several photos of her "partying" with friends available online and through her social media pages. But that's not what her attorney says.
#13 She Has No Friends
Mason told People magazine, "Not much is going on in her life. She gets up each day, hangs around, checks the internet, takes some pictures, and doesn't do muchand she doesn't really make a lot of friends, for obvious reasons," the source said. "When people find out about her history, they usually bail on her. She has very few friends her age."
"I think Casey has a lot of world left to have to deal with. She hasn't been freed from her incarceration yet 'cause she can't go out," he said. "She can't go to a beauty parlor, she can't go shopping to a department store, she can't go to a restaurant, she can't even go to McDonald's. She can't do anything."
#14 Strange Relationship With Legal Team
Few defendants have ever had such a bizarrely close relationship with their attorneys. In addition to the aforementioned reports about Anthony working as her lawyer's housekeeper and nanny, Radar Online alleges that Detective Dominic Casey accused Anthony of having a sexual relationship with defense attorney Jose Baez because she couldn't afford to pay him money for his work. The Daily Mail also reported that Anthony's driver's license is registered at private detective McKenna's address.
