It’s generally believed that men are simply the dirtier sex, which—99% of the time—is a stereotype that is very true. Men care less about their living space being clean. They’ll throw their clothes on the ground. Leave a stack of dirty dishes for, like, weeks, even though they have nothing off of which they can eat. They’ll refuse to do laundry for maybe decades. You get it—when it comes to their living space, it’s a free for all. Anything goes. Good lord, left on their own, men’s living situations can be hopeless. If you get a bunch of them living together… well, you better just hope one of them is the “clean” one or else that place will be a serious health hazard.
Guys are not much better when it comes to their personal grooming. No, I’m not just talking abut showering on a normal basis, though that would be a nice thing to do. I’m also talk about shaving and trimming their nails. It’s the little things—little things that women are ALWAYS doing and men don’t seem to think twice about. Side note: the worst is when they do groom and leave a mess. No, I don’t want your toenail clippings or beard shavings on my pillow, thank you.
The good news is that you can tell a lot from the kind of dirty habits he has, since his dirty habits speak volumes of his personality. Below are 15 dirty habits he may have and what exactly it says about him because, for example, the way he never makes his bed could mean he has mommy issues.
#1 Personality Traits

#2 Gambling
Gambling men are risk-takers, which can make them a lot of fun. "But their over-the-top optimism that they'll come out ahead makes it difficult for them to face reality," says Mitchell Parks, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville. "Hard-core smokers tend to be anxious," says Dr. Parks, so it can be hard to pin them down for couple-time. And if he's a boozer, he could be hiding his insecurity behind his buzz.
#3 Eats On A Dirty Plate
He wants to eat so badly that he’s willing to eat on a dirty plate, guys! He’s also not patient enough to hold off on eating long enough to clean a plate. He wants to eat and he wants to eat now. We can all get down with that to some extent, but most of us just don’t eat off filthy plates. Since he has no impulse control, he may have a problem staying faithful too.
#4 Aggressive While Playing Video Games
An odd amount of aggression during video games or driving could mean he’s an aggressive person. It could mean he’s likely to snap over something little. He probably cries over spilled milk. This can be annoying but okay, as long as his aggression is never taken out of you. That is NEVER okay.
#5 Credit vs. Cash
A guy who likes to flash his plastic craves status. "He may be ambitious and confident. He'll reach his financial goals," says Rob Ronin, Psy.D., a licensed clinical psychologist and registered financial consultant. "If he always pays in cash, he's self-sufficient and independent," which might make him a difficult dude to the corner. And if his wallet is dry? He is a guy who's dependent on others to take care of him.
#6 Always Calling Mom
A man who has to call his mother in order to make a decision “hasn’t found his own independence or identity.” This bad habit is problematic if you’d like to create a lasting union with this man. “He won’t be able to be there for you when you really need him. “He wont turn to you for his support system, because his mother is his support system. He’s still seeking Mummy’s approval.”
#7 Not Opening Doors
“Depending on the relationship, this behavior can mean a man is not being thoughtful, but it can also mean he’s not a romantic. He’s not being protective.” Women like to know they are special. When a guy is unchivalrous, “he’s not thinking about how to excite a woman and turn her on.”
#8 Leaving the Seat Up
When men do this, they’re too interested in being right rather than being happy.” Wanis maintains that guys shouldn’t look at the act of putting the seat down as a loss of manhood because sometimes the toilet seat can be the sign of a power struggle. “Little things like this can reflect larger, deeper problems in the relationship.”
#9 Biting his nails.
This behavior is a sign of insecurity, nervousness, and stress.
#10 He Goes DAYS Without Showering
A guy who skips too many showers says many different things. Mostly, it says that his personal hygiene isn’t a priority. You probably don’t want a dude who stares at himself in the mirror, but you also probably don’t want someone who smelled like a walking foot. Try to subtly push him towards more showers.
#11 Leaving His Dishes.
Men who put their dirty plates in the sink and forget about them are thoughtless. “They are not considerate of you. They’re not clean, neat or organized. This behavior can also mean they are very slapstick in the way they respond to things; they may be procrastinators.”
#12 Cussing:
Men who have foul mouths “don’t understand the power of words. Their language can be really offensive and hurtful to others.” However, you must take this habit in context. If it’s a group of guys cussing at a football game, who cares? Guys can cuss at each other and it’s no big deal. They don’t get as easily offended.” Their use of language is a reflection of masculinity and marks a difference between genders.
#13 He Doesn’t Wash His Hands
Listen, if he’s not washing his hands after using the bathroom, he may just think it’s not that dirty. He may just be like, ‘Have I ever REALLY gotten sick from not washing my hands?’ Because that’s how our minds work. This a guy who simply doesn’t believe it’s all that dirty. He’s reasoned that in his mind. He thinks outside the box! (That’s a positive way to think about, right?)
#14 Watches Too Many Skin Flicks
You could say that this shows he loves sex, but don’t we all really love sex? Most likely, he has an addictive personality. He also may use pleasuring himself for tension relief, which is understandable. But maybe he could find a new, healthier, more socially accepted way to release his tension, such as training in a gym or joining a sports team.

#16 Flips His Boxers Inside Out
If he’s the type to flip his boxers inside out, he’s being lazy. That’s for sure. Bu this dude is also creative and resourceful. Hey, it’s about seeing the bright side of things, right? This is a dude who will use his head and figure out a solution to things when they are tough. He’s totally gross for wearing his boxers inside out, but he thought his way around doing laundry and that’s cool.
#17 Eats Food In The Bathroom
Many of us may not be able to fathom eating a sandwich while sitting on the toilet because it’s so totally and completely gross. Like, no. This says that… I don’t know? Does he like to multitask? Does he love sandwiches? Let’s just go with he loves to multitask and move on because I don’t want to think about someone eating a sandwich while sitting on the toilet ever again.
#18 Likes His Own Farts
It says he’s a dude, who has maybe bought into typical dude behavior. He’s watched too many male comedies and thinks that he should like his farts. He needs to tone down that gross male humor. Also, if he tooting in front of you at an early stage in your relationship, he may be feeling too comfortable too quick.
Oh, and if he farts loudly in public, that means he has a complete disregard for social norms. Don’t date a dude who farts in public. It’s one thing – and gross enough – in the privacy of your own home, but it’s a whole other in public.
#19 Hooks Up With Too Many Girls
While men who have a lot of women on rotation may come off super confident, they are not. They are actually very insecure, which is why they are hooking up with so many women at once. They actually need this for their self-esteem, because they have to validate themselves. Instead of indulging in f**k boy tendencies, he should actually be reading some self-help books.
#20 Leaves His Beard Clippings Everywhere
Well, props to him for at least grooming himself. That’s a start. But, clean up after yourself, man. Maybe he wasn’t expecting company, which we can slightly understand. People’s homes don’t look their best when they aren’t expecting company. But still, he should clean up after himself.
He’s maybe not a detail oriented person if he doesn’t think about the beard clippings and he clearly doesn’t do things beginning to end, as the end of clipping your beards is to clean it up.
