What They Did To This Dog Is Absolutely Disgusting

This is the moving story of a dog named "Palla (Ball)." The name has nothing to do with the animal being a bit overweight, but is unfortunately a comment on her sad life story. Palla was found in January 2016 near Terralba, Sardinia, of the coast of Italy. She was immediately rushed to the Duemari Clinic, an institution that deals with the recovery and care of abused dogs, due to her condition.

Palla was found with a nylon string tied around her neck. It was most likely put on her when she was still a puppy, but was now an extremely tight collar. As she grew, the collar became tighter and tighter until it became a terrible noose that nearly decapitated the dog. This extremely painful string is also responsible for the deformation of her head.

The piece of nylon had severely restricted the blood circulation to her head and sawed through the skin and muscles. As a result, the poor dog suffered a severe case of tissue fibrosis, which in turn resulted in disproportionate swelling of the muzzle, explains Monica Pais, the veterinary who has been caring for Palla since January.

"Palla is, and will remain, a symbol of human stupidity, of the non-sensitivity, of the guilty superficiality," say staff at the Duemari Veterinary Center. The center is used to dealing with cases of animal abuse, their lovely "scrap," as they affectionately call them. "We take care of the 'scrap,' injured, malnourished, abandoned dogs. In five years, we have allowed about 1,000 adoptions, but many dogs remain with us because they are not yet in a position to be adopted."

But Palla's story has also opened a window to human generosity. On the opposite side of the brutality and violence, there are thousands of people who support her cause through Facebook. In just 2 months, Palla became a sort of star on their website. Many fans ask for daily updates on her health, many have offered to make donations to the clinic, and many continue to spontaneously send in toys or basic necessities for this beloved dog.

Although the clinic reiterates that there are no bank accounts open for donations, this kind of generosity is touching. Monica Pais encourages people to follow the center's Facebook page. Palla still needs long-term care, so it's still too early to talk about potential adoption.

However, Palla's case has helped spark attention that can also be used to help other animals in need at their center - and there really are a lot.
