When The Judge Read Out This Man’s Charges, The Court Clerk Flushed, Completely Mortified

Although the government buildings where he worked were perhaps not the most romantic setting, Severo met Kalina Blosser there. He had the job of training her up as a court clerk, and the two shortly began dating.

Their relationship went from strength to strength over the next three years. And co-workers at City Hall were aware of their romance. Indeed, one prosecutor working there even jokingly nicknamed them, “My lovebirds.”

In fact, the couple seemed completely love-struck. As part of his job Severo was required to make videos for the city’s communications department. Colleagues used to tease him that Blosser appeared more often than anyone else in these films.

Then, one day in October 2016 Blosser took her usual seat in the courtroom. But as she and the judge waited for the next case to commence, suddenly something out of the ordinary happened.

The door to the courtroom swung open, and in walked her boyfriend, Severo. At first, Blosser wasn’t taken aback by his arrival, because the two of them used to meet up for lunch during work hours. But then she saw someone else.

In fact, Blosser had spotted Severo’s mother. And this did strike her as being out of the ordinary. Indeed, it was at this point that Blosser began to suspect something unusual was going on. Next, Severo confidently strode up to the defendant’s stand.

As Severo took the stand, Judge Locascio, who was sitting next to Blosser, began talking. “Mr Severo,” said the judge in a very serious voice. “There are several charges against you.” Blosser sat watching Severo. What on earth was going on?

No one, especially Blosser, could have expected the judge to say what he did next. Although he started his next sentence with the phrase, “You’re accused,” the rest of his words were certainly not in accordance with normal court procedure.

“You’re accused, in 2013 while training Kalina Blosser as a court clerk, of failing to maintain a demeanor as a stone cold fox and allowing her to trespass on your heart,” announced the judge. Glosser giggled out loud.

As Severo nodded along to the charges, the judge’s accusations continued. “In count two, you’re accused of following the said Kalina Blosser around this courthouse for three solid years like a puppy dog in an attempt to gain entrance into her heart.”

Laughter was heard around the room following the second charge. Then, as in any normal case, Severo was asked how he would like to plead. He replied, “Guilty, your Honor.”

Next, Severo asked the judge if he could address the “victim” – in other words Blosser – directly. The judge agreed and asked Blosser to step forward. And so began the real proposal. Indeed, Severo had a little speech prepared for her.

He told Blosser he’d been in love with her since the day they met. Promptly getting down on one knee, Severo produced a tiny ring-shaped box and asked his “best friend” to marry him.

She replied, “Yes, yes of course!” and put the ring on, before giving her fiance a big kiss. Severo then went on to hug the colleagues and family members he’d invited to watch the whole episode from the benches.

When asked why he chose the court room as his proposal location, Severo had a logical answer. He told the Charlotte Observer that it made more sense than taking Blosser out for a fancy dinner, because it was the courthouse that had “brought them together” in the first place.

But, of course, he didn’t plan it alone. In fact, as the co-owner of a film production company, Severo was no stranger to putting skits together. And his production skills proved useful ahead of the proposal.

Indeed, he and the judge had gotten together beforehand. What’s more, they’d written a script for the whole “scene” and chose a perfect time to execute it. They decided that a court break on a Friday would be perfect, so as not to disrupt real court proceedings.

Blosser and Severo’s feel-good story has gone viral since Severo posted the video to Facebook. It was quickly picked up by local media outlets and some versions of the video have reached more than 400,000 views. Moreover, the couple’s proposal scene was even featured on Kansas City TV News.

Severo admitted to the Charlotte Observer that the “pressure was so high” on the big day. Nevertheless, he managed to pull off a truly extraordinary proposal. Although it was the most unusual of proposal locations, there’s no doubt that the only thing Severo was “guilty” of was wanting to spend the rest of his life with Blosser.
