#1 The Lunchbox Notes

California mom Christina Zavala embraced a tradition that many parents love. She began putting little notes in her 7-year-old son's lunchbox as a way to show her support and love for him.

#2 Bible Versus

Sometimes she even put in a special verse from the bible that she thought would give her son encouragement. However, the school teacher took a mental note of this gesture when she noticed them daily on the boys lunchbox.

#3 He Began Sharing

Inspired by the notes and verses, the boy began to share his messages with fellow friends and classmates. The children began to look forward to his daily notes and even asked him to read them aloud while at heir lunch table. He happily obliged.

#4 Verses Make Way To The Classroom

Before long the notes and verses, and sometimes entire stories, made their way into the classroom. The teacher wasn't very pleased with this and told the boy he could not share his evangelical verses in the class any longer.

"Teacher, this is the most beautiful story I've ever heard," a little girl gushed one day, eager to share what she'd heard at lunch, upset at hearing the friend would no longer be allowed to share the stories his mother had sent with him in his lunch.

#5 The Teacher Is Appalled

Even with the girls excitement over the verses, the teacher wasn't very pleased. Appalled by the separation of church and state, she demanded that the boy tell his mother that the "notes" were not welcome in her classroom and longer. The child was only seven and the concept of separation was something he had never heard of before.

#6 The Boy Is Upset

He recounted the words to his mother that the teacher had told him as he sobbed that he could no longer read his stories to his friends. He was also crushed that the teacher may not like him anymore.

#7 Furious Mother

The mother was furious and waited until after school the next day to confront the teacher about the situation. The teacher listened quietly as the mom, her son, and over 15 other students began reading bible verses and passages around her. Several parents gathered as well to look on.

#8 Teacher Was Not Amused

The teacher was not amused at this show and became furious, though she decided not to take part in any of the 'congregations' ranting and pressure of the Bible and religion. She called for the school principal to intervene.

#9 The Police Were Called

Just like the teacher, Principal Melanie Pagliaro was reportedly perturbed. Apparently, the family was acting against school policy and needed to move their meetings to a public place, such as a sidewalk, if they continued to insist on holding their gatherings. When they refused, he called the local police to escort them off school property.

#10 The Family Issued A Warning

On May 9, 2016, a Los Angeles deputy sheriff showed up on the family's doorstep.

They were informed that they could no longer distribute notes to other children after school on the grounds that the act may offend someone. The school had the police on its side, but the family had the support of Liberty Counsel, a Christian nonprofit litigation group, who deemed the elementary school's actions unconstitutional.

#11 The School Posts On Social Media

One of the counsel's attorneys, Harry Mihet, didn't hesitate to express his disgust. "I would expect something like this to happen in Communist Romania where I went to elementary school, but cops don't bully 7-year-olds who want to talk about Jesus in the Land of the Free," Mihet said.

The school then took to social media to alert other families that the school would adhere to the constitution and the laws of the land by not allowing religious liberties of its students to be compromised in any way. They also stated that a full investigation was underway.

#12 Christian Parents Became Outraged

The posts by the school and the district only outraged people, including Mihet, who said the school was bullying a 7-year-old student. The family is simply seeking an apology for ridiculing them and their child in front of other students and other parents who were picking up children that afternoon in the parking lot.

What do you think? Based on the facts presented, which party, if either, is in the right? How would you react if it was your child's school under fire?
