#1 Daisy

Stories about animals in shelters are always disheartening and sad. When you hear of an abused animal it's worse, but the story of Daisy is particularly hard to hear. This poor dog from Texas, USA has a disproportionately large body in comparison to her legs and head and has not been properly taken care of since she was a puppy.

#2 Legs Can't Carry Her Enormous Body

No one is actually certain as to the history of Daisy, or how she managed to end up in a shelter, but she has been held in a private Dallas shelter for over five years. Her weight being too much for her tiny legs to carry, she is normally found laying flat in her cage on her stomach.

#3 She Rarely Moves, Walks Or Plays

Personnel at the private kennel say that Daisy rarely ever moves except to eat, and spends all of her waking hours laying flat. She never plays or even rolls around. Her legs are covered in sores and bruises from not moving. They sau that they can't get Daisy to walk at all because of her weight and that she acts like she is in pain.

#4 A Heavy Challenge

The animal protection organization Forgotten Pet Advocates (FPA) found out about Daisy when her caretaker at the original shelter she was housed at died from cancer and all of the animals had to be sent to nearby shelters. Since her entire body had suffered from her obesity, she required special treatment. Amy Beasley, a member of FPA decided to take her in, but even her transportation was a challenge. "We couldn't get the poor girl to walk, or even stand up for that matter. It was so pitiful to watch," Beasley said. It took five men to get her from the caged unit she had been lying in to transport her to an animal clinic.

#5 Removing Daisy From The Only Home She's Ever Known

After deciding it would be nearly impossible to cart Daisy into an office, and then out again, and back to the new facility, they opted to ask the vet to come to them instead. "We aren't sure how much she weighs and we can't just take her to the vet in the car," said Amy. "So, the vet will have to come to her and take her blood and do some tests." The initial move was very confusing for Daisy. Even though she was going to a better place, she'd lost the only home she'd known for a long time and began to withdraw and she stopped eating.

#6 She Gets A New Lease On Life

After Amy decided to take Daisy home with her she got an idea: Her dog Mikey did really well with scared dogs. Sure enough, Mikey took Daisy under his paw, protecting her and showing her that she can trust humans.

#7 She Starts To Show Progress

But why is it that Daisy's became so huge? Is it just from her laziness? The vet was initially unsure about her condition but guessed it had to do with a hormonal irregularity. Her head was tiny like a puppy's but her body had grown to three times its size. They decided to keep track of her progress as she began a new routine.

#8 She Is Now Walking And Playing

After only a few months, Daisy gets up on her own every morning and confidently nuzzles her owners. She adores her best friend Mikey and the two play together for several hours every day. The family makes sure that Daisy is fed the right foods and gets plenty of exercise as well but it is a slow process and Daisy may never have a normal sized body.

#9 She Suffers From Hypothroidism

The vet was able to discover the cause of her large midsection, which is caused from hypothyroidism, a dysfunction of the thyroid. Daisy was born with the condition and it made her body morph out of control while the other parts of her body stayed the same size or grew at a slower pace. She is not fat from overeating or laziness. She has been put on the proper medications and hopefully, she will make a full recovery - she's earned it!
