The very first primetime series for the new FOX network was a rating hit and loved for it lowbrow humor and gutter comedy. The beloved Bundy family will forever remain as one of the most popular cast of characters ever on a TV series. But what have they been doing since the show went off the air in 1997?
#1 Ed O'Neill
Since becoming famous for his role as the lowly shoe salesman Al Bundy, Ed O'Neill has worked steadily though most of his projects were failed, short-lived series like 'Dragnet', 'John From Cincinnati', and 'Big Apple'.
#2 Modern Family
Things took a turn for the better as far as roles are concerned when Ed landed the part of Jay Pritchett on ABC's "Modern Family'. The award-winning series is considered on of television's all-time best series ever, making O'Neill the star of two different series in the top tier. The 70-year old also earned himself a black belt in Brazillian jiu Jitsu.
#3 Katey Sagal
Sagal played one of the most iconic personas in TV history as the big red haired Peg Bundy. Since the show ended she has worked very consistently. She voiced the animated Leela character for the series Futurama and also starred in the sitcom '8 Simple Rule' alongside John Ritter and continued after his death with the show for several more seasons.
#4 Sons Of Anarchy
Sagal later went on to star in a little show about a group of motorcycle gang members called 'The Sons Of Anarchy'. Her portrayal as the group's matriarch, Gemma Teller Morrow is a far cry from her days as the lazy Peg Bundy. She took home several acting awards for the role and only had to kill a few people to get there.
#5 Christina Applegate
The sexpot and teen bombshell Kelly Bundy was a fan favorite, propelling her into her own series after the last episode of Children. The networks were eager to give Applegate her own show but after three trys she went for movies roles instead. Her first series, NBC's 'Jesse' ended after two seasons. The second series, ABC's 'Samantha Who?' lasted only two seasons, and finally, you guessed it, her third series 'Up All Night' lasted only two seasons as well.
#6 The Anchorman
Applegate has continued to work in films and had hefty roles in hits like 'The Sweetest Thing' and 'The Anchorman' movies. However, in 1998 she suffered personal trauma as she battled with breast cancer. After having a double mastectomy she survived cancer free and is continuing to work in small movie roles hoping to land a prime project.
#7 David Faustino
Sadly for fans, playing Bud Bundy proved to be the height of Faustino's career. While he has worked in the industry fairly consistently, most of his parts have been one shot deals, like his stint on 'Entourage' where he played himself.
#8 Voice Over Work
His voice over career has proved to be more successful for Faustino as he continues to do parts in animated series for children like 'Wink Club', and 'The Legend Of Korra'.
#9 Spin-Off
Aside from shedding that 90's mullet, Faustino has not lived up to the persona he played as the mischievous Bud. In fact, he has lead a very normal life compared to most child actors, though he did get arrested in 2007 for marijuana possession. He is hoping that good karma pays off as a possible FOX spin-off of 'Married With Children' starring Faustino as a grown up Bud is in the works.
#10 Amanda Bearse
If you just realized you haven't heard or seen much from Marcy Darcy since the series ended, you're right. She stepped out of the limelight completely and only recently began directing, which was her passion. She had previously lent her directing talents to shows like 'MadTV', 'Dharma & Gregg', and 'The Big Gay Sketch Show'. She is currently working as a director on episodes of several primetime shows including 'Veep' on HBO. When she wed her long time girlfriend in 2010, former costar Ed O'Neill didn't get an invitation because he had always ridiculed her for being gay and she was afraid he would ruin the ceremony by laughing.
#11 Ted McGinley
Known for his role as the male bimbo, and second hubby of Marcy, Ted McGinley was a fan favorite as goofy Jefferson Darcy. He has worked consistently since 1997 without landing anything permanent though he has had roles in many different weekly shows.
#12 The McGinley Curse
His most successful post Children gig came courtesy of the ABC series 'Hope And Faith' which catapulted Kelly Rippa to stardom and no one else's. McGinley is known in TV circles as a show killer and has it's said that he carries the 'McGinley Curse' because every project he gets hired to ends up cancelled.
#13 David Garrison
Since gaining fame as neighbor Steve Rhodes, and first husband of Marcy, Garrison has had a steady employment in the entertainment field. He has guest-starred on shows like 'Arliss', 'The Good Wife,' and 'The West Wing'. He also went for roles on Broadway in 'The Visit' and the original cast of 'Wicked' where he played The Wizard Of Oz.
#14 Michael The Dog
Also known to viewers as one of television's most famous family pets, Buck. Michael retired from acting in 1995 and as real fans know, he was replaced by Lucky, the Cocker Spaniel, who was said to have been Buck reincarnated. Buck was voiced by Cheech Marin, Kevin Curran, and Kim Weiskopf at different times.
#15 Buck Retired
Sadly, Michael passed away in real life in 1996, a year after his final TV appearance. He didn't get to enjoy his retirement for very long, as he was 92 in dog years when he passed. Fans may recall the highly rated episode where Buck passed away when guest Ben Stein tells him that he is in a place all dogs go when they die, and he replies with "You mean I'm in Oprah's refrigerator?"
