Riona Kelly, mother of four children thought her life had ended when she met an unfortunate accident which left her paralyzed waist down.

Marriage is that beautiful relation where the couple before tying the knot vows to cherish their life for eternity and pledges to stick to each other's side in both sickness and health. But unfortunately, 37-year-old Riona Kelly's spouse didn't take his marriage vows to heart and decided to ditch his wife of 14 years after she fell down and suffered a rare spinal injury which left her paralyzed waist down.
After the tragic accident, Kelly was told by the doctors that she might not be able to walk again ever.

Kelly, 37, was rushed to the hospital in March 2015 when she met an accident which led to her being paralyzed from the waist down. Just five days into the hospital stay Kelly had to bear another trauma when her husband decided their marriage was over and asked her for divorce.

She says, “After my husband left me in the hospital, my friend, Sarah, became my next of kin, it was her and the children that supported me during my recovery.Looking back I was miserable in my marriage, but we had built a life together and had responsibilities. It was the time I needed my husband the most.”
Before her unfortunate fall, Kelly also had a car accident 18-months previous and the doctors told her that this might have led to the problems in her spine.

Kelly explains that time to be the darkest period of her life where she needed her husband the most and being wheelchair-bound was so hard on her that she wanted to end her life. She says, “The first time I went out in a wheelchair I thought everyone was looking at me, I hated it and hated myself. If someone had given me the choice I would have ended my life, I didn’t want to live anymore.”

Talking about her journey towards recovery Kelly told that after continued efforts and hours of physiotherapy Kelly was finally able to take her first steps on the parallel bar.
She said, "My consultant was very emotional, he couldn’t believe I had done it with the help of a standing frame. Every day I built up my strength and after four months in the hospital, I was finally allowed to go home. It took me 25 minutes to get up 16 steps, and the same time to come back down again, but I was determined to do it for my children.”

Life even though tests you from time to time, in the end, it also blesses you with a reward. For Kelly, it was to meet her personal trainer, Keith Mason who not only helped Kelly in her recovery to walk again but also provided her the emotional support which she needed the most at that time.
During their physiotherapy sessions, the pair fell in love with each other and with Mason's right support and motivation, today Kelly is not only able to walk but she can also jump. Kelly believes that after all the struggle in life she has finally met her soul mate and is now living the life that she deserves. She said, "After our session, Keith and I stayed in contact, he would ask me how I was getting on and our relationship blossomed from there. We have now been together for 11 months, the children really like him and I finally feel like I’m living the life I deserve.”

Kelly has competed in two marathons with the aid of the wheelchair and now can walk without its assistance. The couple has now become each other's rock and together with each other's help, they are building up their future.

She said, “I now only need my wheelchair to go long distances but my home hasn’t been adapted so I try not use it. Looking back, going through what I did was the best thing to ever happen to me. I’m now back in the gym, and with Keith’s help I’m getting better and stronger than ever.”
