Some people have a special kind of courage when it comes to rescuing dogs.

There are those who don't walk into animal shelters looking for the puppy with the waggiest tail or the brightest eyes.

They seek out the one who seems to need a friend the most.

That's exactly what Melani Andrews did when she met Jake, a dog that would soon become her most loyal friend.

Melani entered the City of Sacramento's Front Street Animal Shelter with a unique request: to adopt the dog that was least likely to find a home.

The shelter was moved by Melani's touching request and took to their Facebook page to share her story.

She had specifically asked for "the oldest, hardest to adopt dog."

It was a noble gesture that spoke volumes about her character.

But Melani's trip to the shelter was motivated by more than a simple act of kindness.

She was looking for something to fill a void in her own life.

The 72-year-old grandmother had recently lost her husband and then her beloved Staffordshire terrier, who had been a source of great comfort.

Feeling the pangs of solitude, her grandchildren felt she could use some company.

"You can't just sit around here by yourself," they urged her.

When Melani met Jake at the shelter, it was a moment of destiny.

Jake was a senior dog whose ailments had made him invisible to others.

Melani wasn't there to find just any pet; she was there to save a life, to bring warmth and affection to a creature who was in desperate straits.

The list of Jake's health issues was daunting.

At 12 years old, this former stray was battling terminal skin cancer and coping with deafness and vision loss.

Yet, Melani saw past all that, wanting only to envelop him in the loving home he deserved.

His medical needs and the expenses they might incur did not faze her in the slightest.

The connection between Melani and Jake was immediate.

"Jake's two friends ignored me, but Jake perked up and started howling," Melani remembered fondly.

It was a sign. In that instant, she knew Jake was meant to be hers, to share in her life for whatever time he had left.

In Melani's care, Jake quickly settled into his new abode, a place where he found joy and solace.

The shelter called it a 'match made in heaven', a perfect pairing, a sentiment Melani wholeheartedly agreed with.

Life became a bit brighter for Melani with Jake around. "Every day I laugh a little bit more. It's not so lonesome," she shared.
