It’s always devastating to realise that the person you’re in love with doesn’t exist. Catfishing is a horrendous experience that many face in this day and age but this story really takes the cake.

In what is being called one of the longest-running and most complex case of catfishing in recent times, a woman was catfished by her own cousin for over a decade.

Kirat Assi, a radio presenter was in love with who she thought was Bobby in a long-distance relationship.

‘Bobby’ was a cardiologist from Brighton and connected with Assi on Facebook in 2009. The two became friends and connected over similarities in their background.

The two being part of the Sikh community in the UK seemed to have a lot of mutuals that Bobby would name drop to make him seem more legitimate. Assi says she had a "very strong network of friends, cousins, uncles and aunties".

Bobby made an effort to integrate himself into Assi’s life but would avoid meeting her face to face.

He went as far as to speak to her parents, was friends with her friends and coworkers and would also go on to claim that his brother had once dated her second cousin.

He even took pictures of a baby wearing clothes that Assi had sent over as a present.

Soon the friendship became a full-blown relationship. Some of the calls Assi would have with Bobby had a sexual element and the two would fall asleep listening to one another.

Claiming that he was now in New York, he managed to evade visits but stayed in touch. Assi claimed she went through several headphones during that time.

"I went through two or three sets,"

The two would play Scrabble, chat and read books to one another online, the details of which are still vague considering her female cousin would have had to pretend to have a male voice.

By the end of the relationship however ‘Bobby’ became abusive and possessive. His controlling behaviour was not something Assi wanted and she decided to call off the relationship.

She told her friends and family to also block ‘Bobby’ and to cease contact with him after she ended things.

This is when the truth finally came out. One of her younger cousins stopped by to console her during her breakup but ended up revealing that ‘Bobby’ was in fact her.

"I went downstairs, opened the door, I was annoyed with her because she'd lied to me,"

"And she was like, 'I'd better not come in', and erm, I was asking her things and basically she just said 'it was all me.'"

"I didn't believe her. She was my smart baby sister. I was very protective of her, I was very proud of her."

"I literally called out loads of names of lots of people and she said 'it was me, it was me'.

"So who have I been sleeping with on the phone for these past three-and-a-half years? She said, 'me'.

"I collapsed. I was physically sick. She never said why. She just said, 'I was in a dark place' and 'I've ruined my own life, too'."

This shocking confession was made in 2018 and by 2020, Assi brought a civil case against her cousin, Simran Bhogal but settled the situation out of court.

She is now revealing details of the story in a documentary named ‘Sweet Bobby’.

"She has taken ten years of my life from me, years I will not get back,"

"In that time I could have met someone real, had a baby. I lost my friends, my job, my savings.

"I opened up to him - her! - telling him things about my hopes, dreams, my childhood, that I'd never tell anyone. I feel violated."
