The TikToker has opened up about what it was like making the discovery while pregnant that her husband is her third cousin.
Marcella Hill from Utah recently shared quite the story on her TikTok account.
She was utterly surprised to find out that she had accidentally married her third cousin. This startling discovery came to light while she was pregnant.
She turned to TikTok, a platform she uses often, to share something she had never before revealed publicly.
During a casual online search for baby names, she and her husband decided to check out FamilySearch, a genealogy site, hoping to find some name inspiration.
However, what started as a fun search quickly led to an unexpected turn of events.
Marcella explained that while they were browsing, her husband, who was sitting next to her, remarked jokingly:
"Oh that's funny, we have the same grandma and grandpa's names."
You can see where this is going...
She looked over and noticed that the family line he was viewing was identical to hers.
At first, she thought he was still logged into her account.
A closer look revealed a shocking truth.
"I look at this line and it's all the same as mine. So I think, 'Oh no no, you're still logged into my account'.
"Then we start looking at it and we realise my grandpa is his grandma's first cousin," she recounted.
They decided to call their grandparents to clarify this bewildering discovery, only to confirm their suspicions.
They both shared the same great-great-grandparents.
"Sure enough, sure do. They lived together when they were growing up as children," Marcella shared, still in disbelief.
In the video, she humorously resolved: "So I've never publicly told anyone but I accidentally married my cousin."
She even made light of the situation by adding that now when they attend family reunions, they cover both sides of the family in one go since discovering they're third cousins.
The revelation quickly went viral, with viewers expressing their shock and amusement.
One viewer commented in disbelief: "How didn't y'all realise this at the wedding?"
Others chimed in with humor. "So in a way your baby is its own 4th cousin. 3rd cousins not a huge deal, you're good. hilarious though," one person remarked.
Another suggested keeping the discovery a secret, while yet another quipped: "Say you're from Utah without saying you're from Utah."
Interestingly, in the US, while it's permissible for second cousins to marry in every state, the rules for first cousins vary.
Some states allow it, while others do not. In Utah, for example, first cousins can only marry if they are both over 65, and a district court finds that they are unable to have children.
Marcella further elaborated on her unusual marital situation in another TikTok video.
"We got married at a courthouse after work on a Wednesday," she explained.
She posed a hypothetical question: "Let's say we had the wedding, and my grandpa and his grandma were there, and we found out that we were third cousins at the wedding, what were we supposed to do?"
This story has surely captured the attention of many, blending shock with a touch of humor.
