A woman surprised people by sharing that she and her husband are blood relatives. She claims she just found out while she was pregnant with his child.
Woman Discovers She Accidently Married Her COUSIN While Pregnant With His Baby
A Utah mother has recalled the shocking moment she discovered she had 'accidentally married her cousin' while pregnant with his child.
Marcella Hill, 41, a business owner, revealed the news about herself and her husband, Tage, to her almost 300,000 TikTok fans last Monday.
'So I've never told anyone publicly, but I accidentally married my cousin,' she says in the video, which has nearly one million views.
'I was sitting on the couch looking for names for the baby that we were about to have and I was on [genealogy site] FamilySearch.'
Marcella stated that she noticed something was wrong while looking at the names of her grandfather, grandmother, great-grandfather, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.
‘Husband's next to me on his own FamilySearch and he's like, "Oh that's funny, we have the same grandma and grandpa's names,' she said.
'I look at this line and it's all the same as mine. So I think, "Oh no no, you're still logged into my account."’
'Then we start looking at it and we realize my grandpa is his grandma's first cousin.'
The couple then contacted their grandparents to see if they knew each other. As it turned out, their assumptions were correct, and the couple soon discovered that they had great-great-grandparents, making them third cousins.
'Sure enough, sure do. They lived together when they were growing up as children,' Marcella said.
'We (Marcella and her husband) are third cousins.'
Marcella revealed that they had previously received a prize for 'being the closest related in a neighborhood activity.'
‘And when I go to my family reunion, he gets to go to his too at the same time,' she added.
Some people wondered how the couple didn't find out earlier.
'How didn't y'all realize this at the wedding?' one person queried.
Another added: 'Wait how did y'all not know this beforehand?! Your grandparents weren’t at the wedding?'
In another TikTok video, Marcella responded to these comments, saying: 'We got married at a courthouse after work on a Wednesday.'
She continued: 'Let's say we had the wedding, and my grandpa and his grandma were there, and we found out that we were third cousins at the wedding, what were supposed to do?'
Others, though, were unconcerned because they were third cousins.
'That's far enough apart lol. Crazy coincidence though,' one TikTok user said.
'3rd cousins are pretty far removed,' someone else wrote.
Another joked: 'Say you’re from Utah without saying you’re from Utah.'
A few social media users also think Marcella should have kept this news to herself.
'I think you should have just not told anyone,' one person said.
It also appears that Marcella isn't the only one who married a distant relative by accident.
'Ancestry taught my husband and me that we are 8th cousins. Barely count as cousins but still was a shock,' a TikTok user wrote.
'My husband's parents were 5th cousins. I laughed when I heard this from his mom (don’t think she liked my laugh),' another said.
