A woman turned to one of Reddit’s most popular communities wondering whether she was wrong to leave a party after hearing heaps of demeaning comments from her boyfriend’s pals. Strangers online supported her while her spineless boyfriend didn't.
Woman Leaves Party After Enduring Insensitive Jokes About Her Being A Gymnast
Friends are a source of joy and are our chosen family. Though most of us grow up sharing our deepest secrets and all kinds of jokes with our friends, still any healthy friendship needs respectful boundaries when it comes to our romantic partner, which shouldn't be crossed.
A woman shared on Reddit's AITA community, how she was harrassed by her boyfriend's pals who made inappropriate jokes about her profession and personal life, while her spineless boyfriend laughed alongside them. The post has managed to receive nearly 11K upvotes, as well as 1.9K comments discussing the audacity of some folks.
OP is a 25-year-old gymnastics coach dating a 29-years-old programmer. She went to a party to be introduced to his friends after dating for 10 months.
While most were nice, some of his gross friends started making sexual jokes about OP because of her profession.
And instead of telling them to knock it off, her boyfriend laughed along with them. The audacity...
When OP defended herself, instead of supporting her he told her to "relax". They didn't stop their insensitive remarks, so OP decided to leave the party.
OP's reaction would make any considerate boyfriend apologize for his behaviour, but this guy is at the next level of insensitivity. He texts her to tell her that she "overreacted" and "embarrassed" him.
OP usually tolerates such stuff from other people, but she didn't expect such vile attack from his friends, which triggered her.
But now she's questioning herself if what she did was wrong?
Maybe she could try to lead the conversation elsewhere? She's feeling guilty for embarrassing his friends, but at the end of the day, it was them who chose to embarrass her first.
Fellow community members shared their thoughts on this situation and came out in her support unanimously. Sometimes strangers online can see things clearly when we are blinded by love.
Some made her realize what he's been telling them behind her back. And now his sexual pride is injured which embarrassed him cuz she stood up for herself and didn't act subservient.
While other sympathized with her and reminded her of the Larry Nassar Case which was a huge scandal in USA Gymnastics and how such sexual comments can be triggering for gymnasts who've been through something similar.
One user stereotyped all programmers as spineless misogynists
Another user changed the title of the post and thinks it should be her bf who should post
One user felt gross at the sexualization of young gymnasts who are basically children
Reddit users were supportive towards the OP and unanimously decided that her boyfriend and his friends were the A*****e. She should reconsider her relationship with him cuz these are some major red flags and her actions will educate them about their misogyny and sexism.
