A woman has opened up about a painful mistake that led to her and her husband losing their entire life savings.

It all started after her husband received a suspicious phone call urging him to take immediate action.

Scammers have been around for a long time, and we’re often warned to stay alert and cautious. Still, even the most careful people can sometimes be caught off guard.

This is exactly what happened to a popular TikTok creator, who explained how she and her husband were tricked by a well-planned scam that left them with nothing.

Amelia Mandeville-Marinaro, who is 28 years old, shared her experience and admitted that both she and her husband missed some clear warning signs.

Holding back tears, she said the purpose of her video was to help others avoid making the same mistake. She hopes by speaking out, others will learn from what they went through.

In a video posted to her TikTok account, @winnieandminnie0, she explained: "Today, we were scammed which meant that we've lost our savings which is, you know, scary because I'm on maternity leave but I wanted to do this video so that other people learn from our mistakes."

"I know people are going to be like, 'why are you so stupid, it's obvious it's a scam' but I think sometimes, in the moments, you don't realise it and I'm not doing this video to say we weren't stupid."

Amelia explained that her husband, Pete, got a phone call from a hidden number. The caller told him someone had hacked their bank account and that they needed to act quickly.

Pete texted Amelia, letting her know something was going on but reassured her he was on the phone trying to fix it.

He asked her to send over her bank details. Although she did, it raised a red flag for her since she figured the bank should already have that information.

Her doubts grew when Pete said she would need to approve a payment. The caller claimed they were moving their money to another account for safety.

Feeling uneasy, Amelia decided to log into their online banking and noticed a message stating that the bank was not trying to contact them at all.

But Pete told her the message was part of the bank’s strategy to confuse whoever had hacked their account.

Even though she said her instincts were screaming that something was wrong, she went ahead and approved the payment.

Almost instantly, she knew something was off and described the situation as 'dodgy.'

With tears in her eyes, Amelia shared, “We have just paid someone all of our savings and it was, it was silly, it was stupid of us,” before stopping the video, visibly shaken by the experience.

Pete explained that the scammers seemed incredibly convincing.

They knew specific details about their account, which made it harder to question their legitimacy.

Responding to followers on social media, Amelia said the bank is currently investigating what happened.

She and Pete still hold onto hope that they might recover their money.
