A woman poured dish soap into another container, suspecting Walmart of cheating customers. Viewers explained the need for packaging space and raised concerns about legal consequences.
Woman Records Herself Filling Up Dish Soap to Avoid "Getting Ripped Off" By Walmart, Sparks Debate
Remember how disappointed you were as a child when you first opened a bag of chips and discovered that most of the contents were air instead of beautifully crispy fried morsels of salty goodness? Many people have voiced their displeasure at being duped by "false advertising" from the Big Snack sector.
If you were fortunate enough to know someone who worked in the chip packaging sector or took the time to research why this is the case, it turns out that these goodies must be packed and supplied to businesses in this form for a specific reason.
These bags aren't filled with air; instead, they contain a specific gas that helps keep the contents from crumbling into a jumble of tiny fragments while still maintaining their freshness.
Similar practices are used by other products, such as liquid soap.
Shipping a product that is engorged with plastic containers could lead to more punctures and severe losses for the manufacturer, the businesses that buy the products, and the consumers who take them home. More demand and higher costs result from fewer supplies being available. Bad news.
However, it appears that one TikTok user is ignorant of the idea of consumer products being sold by volume.
They made the decision to act independently after noticing the empty area at the top of a transparent Dawn liquid soap bottle. In a TikTok video with the words "Walmart is not ripping me up" overlaid, @chemical.xxx, a user, can be seen opening a Dawn soap container and putting some Dawn soap into a container that she probably meant to buy.
Her video caused a stir in the comments section, where several viewers criticized the woman for failing to grasp the idea of volume.
"You're not getting ripped off, you are paying for a volume. There’s a space left in most things to avoid leaking or popping in transport," one person wrote.
Another penned, "They literally wrote the amount of the liquid in the container, you're not getting ripped [off]."
There were other people who provided additional shipping science knowledge, including: "Chemical safety is that there must be space in the container in case of a reaction to surrounding temps. [That] is for everyone[‘s] safety."
The action was viewed by many as the most trivial thing they had ever witnessed.
Then there was the issue of the now "wasted" bottle of Dawn soap, which other customers would undoubtedly avoid buying as a result of the TikTok-er's actions: "Now you just ripped someone off lmao."
"Might as well steal the second bottle cuz they can’t use it no more."
However, the Federal Anti-Tampering Act provides a maximum punishment of $25,000 and 10 years in prison or a $100,000 fine and life in prison if tampering ends in death.
As a result, the TikTok user may also find herself in legal jeopardy. It's difficult to believe that someone's dish soap leaking into another container will result in death.
"Nobody is agreeing with you," another added. "That was literally like 5 cents of extra soap and you’re ruining it for others.".
While one user wrote: "So now the employee has to damage it out and throw it away. What a waste. These are sold by volume, it literally tells you how much is in there."
Another added a possible explanation, writing: "The space allows the container to withstand possible pressure while in transit. While we're at it. The air in chips helps it stay fresh."
The original TikTok user who posted the video also listed their CashApp ID in the comments section, which seemed to imply that they were making the video as a joke.
