A woman living with a condition that causes her to sweat extreme amounts every single day has shared what the earliest signs looked like for her. She remembered how unusual it felt at the time, especially since no one around her seemed to experience anything similar.

Darcie Hamilton, who grew up in Scotland, UK, first noticed the issue when she was only 10 years old. She realized she was sweating far more than her classmates, and the contrast became impossible to ignore.

The problem followed her into her teenage years. After facing constant bullying at school because of the visible sweat, she ended up leaving at age 14. Two years later, doctors diagnosed her with one of the most severe cases of hyperhidrosis they had ever encountered.

More than ten years have passed since her diagnosis, and Darcie’s condition has progressed in a drastic way. Today, at 22, she can lose up to three liters of sweat in a single day, which affects nearly every part of her routine.

She carries spare clothing everywhere she goes so she can regularly change, and she showers at least five times daily in an attempt to manage the constant discomfort. The condition impacts her life from morning to night, often dictating how she plans her day.

The Cleveland Clinic explains that hyperhidrosis causes a person to sweat far more than the body needs to, and in some cases it happens even when there is no clear trigger.

The condition is tied to how the body regulates temperature, which means sweating may happen even when someone is resting, when it is cold outside, or at random moments when sweating normally wouldn’t occur.

Studies estimate that roughly three percent of adults in the United States between ages 20 and 60 experience hyperhidrosis, showing that it is more common than people realize.

During her interview on This Morning, Darcie explained that her first symptoms appeared in childhood. She only noticed the pattern once she began doing more physical activity.

She said: "When I was in school, primary school, I would notice taking part in physical activity, I would be sweating a lot more than my peers."

"I would be sweating from the top of my armpits to practically the top of my waist, so it was really bad, really visible and notable."

Her school years were heavily shaped by the condition. She recalled how classmates called her “dirty” and regularly bullied her, making the experience even more isolating and difficult to cope with.

As she entered her teenage years, the symptoms grew worse and came with painful side effects. She developed chafing, rashes, blisters, and severe sores from the constant moisture on her skin, and even the texture of certain clothing made her feel uncomfortable.

"It overtook my life, I was in my bed all day every day. I didn't want to leave the house or make friends. I was embarrassed," she added.

"I really struggled to have good intake of fluids so that would cause migraines, really sore head."

"I would just be exhausted all the time just from the symptoms."

To prevent dehydration, Darcie needed to drink nearly five liters of water every day. The excessive sweating also led to a number of skin problems, including contact dermatitis, which is a type of eczema that causes itching and irritation.

"The sores in my armpits and hands were excruciating. I would get hundreds of tiny blisters on both hands," she admitted.

Doctors initially offered her Botox injections through the NHS to help reduce the symptoms. However, when this treatment option was later removed, she had no choice but to pay for the injections privately, adding financial stress on top of everything else.

Darcie explained: "I got one appointment and it changed my life for a year. Just over a year. No symptoms."

"I was a completely different person, full of confidence."

"I felt like I could go out with friends, I could socialize. Wear what I want."
