William Shakespeare once asked the importance of a name with his famous question, 'What's in a name?'
For one TikToker, the answer seems to be a fair amount of awkwardness and inconvenience.
The social media influencer known as @thesam_show, or by her real name, Samantha Hart, shared an update with her 45,500 followers last year about a significant change in her professional life.
On September 23, she began a TikTok video with an announcement:
"Well y'all it's official. I have a new job which means that I will be transitioning from my current position to a new one within the next two weeks."
"In amidst all of this excitement that I feel about this transition and this move and this opportunity I am filled with dread over one aspect of moving to a different job."
Samantha then went on to share that she inevitably encounters a 'tough conversation' each time she joins a new company.
The issue? Her name doesn't quite fit the mold for the standard 'company email structure'.
"My name is Samantha Hart," she clarified.
"Most companies use the email designation of first initial [followed by] last name."
"Meaning that my email would be 'Shart' and I've had two professional jobs so far and every single workplace this has been the email company structure."
She mentioned receiving a few messages from Human Resources (HR) departments, stating that her full name doesn't neatly align with their email format.
"I don't want an email that says 'Shart'," she joked.
"Fix it, give me something else. So now, as I transition to this new role, I did investigate the email structure at this new company."
To her dismay, Samantha discovered that her new employer also adheres to the same email naming convention, and she expressed her reluctance to engage in 'another uncomfortable conversation'.
Wrapping up the one-minute 38-second video, she pondered whether she should proactively reach out to HR this time around.
"Do I just reach out off the back and say look - you're not gonna want my email to be this? Or should I let them come to me? Should I let them initiate the conversation?"
Following the widespread attention her video received, many TikTok users came forward, sharing their own stories of name-related email woes.
One viewer, going by the screen name Chris.Littmann, commented: "Clittmann has entered the chat. Have been dealing with this since college."
Another shared, "My name is Sue Hartlove so my work emails are always 'shartlove'."
"RKelley has entered the chat," chimed in a third.
And a fourth, using the screen name Samantha Wallo, empathized: "As Swallo I feel your pain."
