Diana Armstrong's record-breaking fingernails, stretching to an unbelievable 42ft 10in in total length, have raised an intriguing question: how does she manage everyday tasks, particularly using the restroom, with such immense talons?
Diana Armstrong from Minnesota, USA, has been growing her fingernails for over 25 years, achieving a combined length longer than a standard school bus.
In 2022, she was officially recognized for having the longest fingernails ever recorded on a pair of hands, a feat that has not been without its challenges.
With such exceptionally long nails, Diana faces difficulties with simple tasks like fastening buttons or zipping coats.
Guinness World Records reveals that people are particularly curious about how she handles restroom visits, a question they posed to her directly.
Diana admits using public restrooms is a challenge, as she can only fit into the largest stalls due to the length of her nails.
"When I go to a public restroom, I go to the stall that is the biggest. If someone is in that stall I have to wait until they've finished and then go in because I can't use the smaller ones because my nails are longer than them," she explains.
Detailing her restroom routine, Diana shares she manages with "a lot of toilet paper."
"Well you know, when I go to the bathroom it'll be the same as anyone else going to the bathroom, just I work with my nails probably in a different way they'd work with theirs. I use a lot of toilet paper. I don't wrap it around my hand like some people do, I can't do it like that, because it ain't going to work that way."
Washing hands also requires a different approach as she can't rub soap between her hands like others.
Besides bathroom struggles, Diana has had to forego driving and is limited in her clothing choices due to her nails.
The maintenance of her nails is also time-consuming.
She only files, buffs, and polishes them every four to five years due to the lengthy process.
Painting her nails takes about four hours and uses around 15 bottles of nail polish.
Visiting a nail salon hasn't been an option for over two decades as no one is willing to work on nails as long as hers.
Instead, she relies on her grandchildren, who paint her nails using a sponge.
But there's a heartbreaking reason behind Diana's decision to grow her nails so long.
She last cut them in 1997, just before a family tragedy.
During a grocery trip, Diana received a distressing call from her youngest daughter, saying, "Ma, Tisha won't wake up."
Her daughter Latisha had died in her sleep from an asthma attack at just 16 years old.
Latisha used to manicure her mother's nails every weekend, and following her passing, Diana made a vow never to cut them again.
Initially, her other children were against it.
"I would tell them 'Mind your business,'" said Diana.
But once she shared the reason behind her decision, her children understood and accepted her way of remembering Latisha.
Her daughter Rania expressed her feelings, saying, "When she told us the back story, it kind of changed my feelings towards it because just as much as she missed my sister, I missed her too. So, if that's her way of holding on to her, then I accept."
