New Study Finds Many Women Would Rather Stay Single Than Compromise On This Major Relationship Issue

A new study has revealed a surprising truth about modern dating — one factor, in particular, is turning potential love stories into dealbreakers before they even begin.

Everyone has their own “icks” when it comes to dating — those small habits or quirks that make you lose interest instantly. Some are harmless, while others can completely change how you see someone.

But as lighthearted as those preferences can be, researchers say there’s something far more serious driving people apart in relationships today, and it has nothing to do with appearance or mannerisms.

According to a new paper published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, political compatibility may now be one of the biggest deciding factors in whether women choose to date or stay single.

The research, conducted by teams at the University of Göttingen and the University of Jena in Germany, analyzed responses from more than 13,000 single heterosexual women across 144 countries using data from the “Ideal Partner Survey.”

The results showed that women who hold strong political opinions are much more likely to value shared political beliefs over romantic chemistry, even if that means staying single.

Among those surveyed, women who identified with left-wing views were the most selective — 47 percent said they would rather remain single than date someone whose political opinions clashed with their own.

On the other end of the spectrum, 41 percent of right-leaning women said the same. Only 22 percent of politically moderate women considered political disagreement a dealbreaker, suggesting that middle-ground voters tend to be more open to differing opinions.

"Political orientation is related to many aspects of our lives," the authors wrote, explaining how closely politics can be tied to personal identity and relationships.

"Women holding more extreme political views showed the strongest preferences for political similarity."

The researchers noted that conservative women often placed higher importance on traditional values such as religion, cultural background, financial stability, and career achievement when evaluating potential partners.

In contrast, women on the political left were less concerned with these traditional markers and more focused on personal compatibility, shared beliefs, and social alignment.

Still, no matter their political stance, women across the board agreed that kindness and emotional support were essential traits in a partner — qualities that remained consistent regardless of ideology.

The study also found that height was an unexpected factor for many participants. While most women said they preferred taller partners, those with conservative leanings ranked height as significantly more important. Researchers linked this preference to attraction toward what they described as a “traditional masculine provider stereotype.”

Political scientist Pete Hatemi from Penn State University pointed out that political alignment has become one of the strongest shared traits among couples in the past two decades.

Speaking to the New York Post, he explained: "You're more likely to have a long-term partner that you don't find very attractive than one that has opposite political views on highly important topics."

Meanwhile, University of British Columbia sociology professor Laura Nelson added perspective on the topic, saying: "Left vs. right is not just about who you will vote for."

"It's tied to different - and competing - conceptions of morality. When you think about who you want to build a life with … it would be shocking if political beliefs were not correlated with partner preferences."
