Well, it is pretty obvious to observe that the shows follow a script or storyline set in advance. The results of all the fights are determined in advance, and the characters play a set role, as in any soap opera.
The difference between WWE and any other soap opera though is WWE combines the best of both soaps and sport. At least it tries to do that. The stories try to portray different characters, who represent different ideals or beliefs, and fight for those beliefs. Also, the flights displayed are pretty well choreographed and are full of energy, skill and athleticism.
It is called kayfabe in wrestling circles that stands for the portrayal of staged events within the industry as "real" or "true," specifically the portrayal of competition, rivalries, and relationships between participants as being genuine and not of a staged or pre-determined nature.
And the fights are real. Training is given so that wrestlers hit their moves without hurting each other badly. They are trained to avoid injury though their bodies do suffer. We have seen WWE superstars being subjected to injuries during fights and being out of action for several months. So, there are indeed real risks involved.
