Henna tattoos have increased in popularity over the years. You can get them done at most amusement parks, county fairs, local tattoo shops, and sometimes right in front of your local grocery store. This young girl got her henna tattoo while away on holiday in Egypt. It was a beautiful work of art, but what came next is just horrifying.

Poor little Madison Gulliver got her henna tattoo while at a hotel in Egypt, but once she returned to her home in the UK it had become painfully itchy. Next thing she and her family knew, it had erupted into blisters. The blisters needed to be cut away at a burn unit, and the ordeal has left her scarred for life.

Specifically, black henna tattoos contain high levels of a toxic chemical called Paraphenylenediamine or PPD. PPD can be found in a ton of products like hair dye and sun cream but in very small doses. PPD in henna has recently been recognized as a public health issue since it causes hypersensitivity reactions, especially in children.
The manager of the hotel where the tattoo was done released a statement acknowledging that the tattoo was done in the hotel's salon and they were unaware of the dangers of black henna ink since it was not warned in their brochures.

‘I think it’s partly my fault because I didn’t know about it, but also the fault of the salon because they are using dangerous chemicals on children. ‘We would have thought that the travel agents would have had concerns about this. We want to get the message out to other people about this.’

Madison's father said that, during their trip, his wife needed to spend two days of their holiday in the hospital with a gall bladder infection. Since both of his children were so good during that time, he decided to treat them to their black henna tattoos.
His son, Sebastian, complained of itching almost right away, so his tattoo was washed off.

Shortly after returning home, Madison's skin began to bubble. It started as a raised section towards the top with no redness, but the next morning the whole thing was itching so badly that they washed it off which revealed a rash in the same shape as the tattoo.
As it started to blister, they got online and started searching black henna tattoos, and this is when they really started to worry. Their doctor gave steroid cream to treat the blisters. After five different creams and ointments were unsuccessful, she was referred to the burn specialists.

He said: ‘We started to panic. They had never seen it before, and each time we went in they were trying different things but it was getting worse and worse.’
The burn doctors did a test on the liquid that was seeping from the blisters and it tested positive for chemical burns.
They tried to soak the blisters and rub them off, but it was impossible because they were so incredibly thick, so they had to cut them off.

Madison was referred to scar management and has to wear a pressure bandage in order to minimize the scars on her arm. Now, her family wants to warn other people of the possible dangers of black henna tattoos.

They reached out to the hotel as well letting them know they did not want compensation or anything. They just want to keep this from happening from others. The hotel has agreed to no longer offer the black henna tattoos because of what happened to Madison.
The hotel told the family that they know that just removing the services from the hotel salon does not help Madison, but they wished her a speedy recovery and their deepest apologies.
