The world of sports and romance collide in the exciting new film 'Challengers,' featuring the talented Zendaya in a captivating role as a seductive tennis star.
The recently released trailer has left audiences buzzing with anticipation, as it teases a thrilling narrative filled with love, rivalry, and unexpected twists.
The much-anticipated first trailer for "Challengers" was released by MGM on Tuesday, showcasing a trio of young tennis players played by Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor. The trailer hints at a captivating storyline where their paths intertwine romantically during their teenage years and reunite years later for a significant match between the two male characters.
In this sports comedy-drama, Zendaya takes on the role of Tashi Duncan, a highly regarded prospect in tennis, as introduced in the trailer. Her exceptional talent catches the attention of Patrick (played by Josh O'Connor) and Art (played by Mike Faist), setting the stage for a compelling dynamic among the three characters.
Set to the upbeat rhythm of Rihanna's "S&M," the trailer depicts the budding romance between the three characters, followed by a significant setback in Tashi's career. An unfortunate leg injury sustained during a match.
Years later, Tashi is shown married to Art and working as his coach, showcasing the evolution of their relationship and the challenges they face together.
An official synopsis describes Tashi as "a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court."
"Married to a champion on a losing streak, Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend," the synopsis reads.
"As their pasts and presents collide, and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself: What will it cost to win?"
Renowned director Luca Guadagnino, known for his collaborations with Zendaya's Dune co-star Timothée Chalamet on films such as Call Me By Your Name and Bones and All, revealed in an interview with Variety last October that Zendaya, along with O'Connor and Faist (recognized for his role in West Side Story), underwent a rigorous three-month training program to authentically portray professional tennis athletes in the film.
"She's wonderful," Guadagnino, 51, said of Zendaya's performance at the time. "I mean, wow. We edited the movie and we almost actually don't use any of her double. She's so good."
During the aforementioned interview with Variety, director Luca Guadagnino characterized his upcoming film as a "sexy comedy," providing a glimpse into the tone and style of the movie.
The film, Challengers, was helmed by Guadagnino and features a screenplay penned by Justin Kuritzkes. Notably, Zendaya is not only part of the cast but also holds a producer credit for the film. Additionally, the highly acclaimed and two-time Academy Award-winning composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are responsible for creating the film's captivating music.
Challengers is slated for a theatrical release on September 15th, offering audiences the opportunity to experience the film's captivating story, compelling performances, and the unique blend of humor and sensuality that Guadagnino has promised.
