A man bravely stabbed a crocodile in the head to free his friend from its deadly jaws.

A terrifying reptile "leaped out" of the water and clamped down on one of the friends' heads as they were crab hunting at the popular tourist destination Horizontal Falls in Western Australia.

It wasn't until the victim's companion stabbed the crocodile in the head that it let go of the crabber, who was then taken to the hospital for what is believed to be not serious injuries.

A caller to Radio 6PR reported the details of the attack and his faster defense, and the Royal Flying Doctor's Service, which claimed to provide first aid assistance over the phone, confirmed it.

A caller who was talking to the radio station described how the men were crab fishing close to the falls when they were attacked by a crocodile.

Fortunately, given the nature of their work, they had a knife nearby, which they used to stab the beast in the skull, possibly saving their lives.

The reptile, which measured up to 9 foot 8 inches in length and may be removed from the region if it looks possible to strike again, was described by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation, and Attraction (DBCA).

A spokesperson from DBCA told Daily Mail Australia: "An interaction between a 2-3 meter estuarine crocodile and two members of the public at Cyclone Creek, Talbot Bay in Lalang-Gaddam Marine Park was reported to the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation, and Attractions on Monday.

"If a crocodile matching the description of the one involved in yesterday’s incident is located and continuing to pose a risk to public safety, an operational decision may be made to remove the animal."
