A young man from New York, Lawson Spolansky, recently took TikTok by storm when he shared an astonishing tale about discovering that his so-called best friend was, in fact, a paid actor.
Spolansky, who amusingly tags himself as an 'embarrassing best friend' on his TikTok profile, decided earlier this month to open up about the true nature of his friendship, which has captivated over a million viewers so far.
The story kicks off in 2012 when Spolansky, a mere five years old at the time and grappling with 'social and behavioral issues' at school, had an unexpected encounter.
It happened one sunny day in July at the playground.
After taking a tumble from the monkey bars and injuring himself, a little blonde boy approached, not with sympathy, but to 'mock' him.
However, the situation took a turn for the better when the boy's mother intervened, leading to Spolansky and the boy spending the day together at the park.
Come September, Spolansky was taken aback to find the same blonde boy, known to him as Dexter, seated beside him at school.
This marked the beginning of what seemed to be a 'robust' friendship that saw Spolansky gaining confidence and improving academically over the years.
The plot thickens in 2018 when Dexter proposes a grand trip to Paris, Spain, and Universal California, claiming he would fund it with his birthday savings.
Excited, Spolansky began preparations, only to be let down by Dexter's 'weird excuses' for canceling their plans shortly after.
The mystery deepened when Spolansky stumbled upon a photo on Instagram featuring Dexter, his mom, and surprisingly, Spolansky's own aunt, all smiling in Hollywood.
Confused and seeking answers, Spolansky confronted Dexter and his aunt, only to receive vague explanations of a 'miscommunication.'
In 2021, the story took another twist.
Spolansky's boyfriend, who was working as a pool boy for Dexter's 'mom', uncovered the truth: the woman was not Dexter's mom but his agent.
Through his TikTok video, Spolansky shared the shocking revelations with his audience.
He found out that his aunt was actually best friends with Dexter's real mother, a woman he had never met.
This woman had orchestrated the entire friendship by paying her son to befriend Spolansky.
Adding to the intrigue, Spolansky's therapist turned out to be the sister of Dexter's agent.
"So now I'm left broken, [a] severe amount of trust issues, and I feel like I never really went anywhere," he said.
"I thought I had a real friend, but then you find out this friend is actually paid."
Claiming he 'never really experienced true friendship', Spolansky added: "I don't know what to do now but I thought it would be interesting to share."
Viewers have been left well and truly blown away by Spolansky's story, with one person commenting: "What in the Truman show is this dude omg that is insane."
Another baffled viewer added: "5? You were a child. Normal child behavior, shame on the adults."
However, other viewers weren't convinced by Spolansky's story and attempted to poke holes in his account.
"He was 5... there's no way he has such vivid memories and remembers the sequence of events the day at the park. This is completely made up," one person claimed.
Despite the doubts and criticism, including his aunt's denial of the claims, Spolansky has stood by his story.
He responded to the skeptics, saying, "It hurts me that people truly believe I would want to makeup something so horrific. I am trying to be vulnerable here and share some real feelings."
