People have begun to hunt areas closer to home for thrills after the far-flung frontiers of mankind have been trawled by adventurers and explorers ten times over. Urban exploring is a subset of that movement aimed at those who live in, well, urban areas and cities.
Urban Explorer’s Eerie Finds In The Tunnel Across The Street Have Him Running For His Life
However, a recent film depicted an urban explorer's journey through a passage dangling above one of North Wales' busiest overpasses, which left him 'racing for his life.'
For those who are familiar with Wales, the overpass opened in 1983 and is close to Colwyn Bay and the Rainbow Bridge.
Many people who have driven through the region have seen the passage above the flyover, but this video will be their first look inside.
The explorers entered the bridge through a steel manhole before climbing down a set of steel steps, according to the footage, which was created by the YouTube channel That Chapter.
As the crew crossed to the opposite side of the overpass, one of the explorers, who did not want to be identified, told NorthWalesLive that he had to crouch down and even crawl along his belly, experiencing claustrophobia.
He said: "The distance from one end to the other is surprisingly long, but by the halfway point you can look down through narrow gaps onto the motorway below which helped keep us calm, in a strange way."
When they approached the midway point of the flyover and spotted items at the far end of the narrow tunnel, the tranquility quickly dissipated.
The explorer said: "We reached the end, and let me tell you, We have never felt the same sense of dread before or since."
A solitary fold-away chair sat in front of them, facing the tunnel's wall, with a newspaper page depicting a naked woman in an amorous position affixed to the wall above it.
"I can't put my finger on it but it seemed more sinister than sexy if that makes any sense," the explorer said.
"The scene that lay before us had rendered us completely speechless, and an overpowering sense of panic could be felt collectively.”
"Needless to say we got out of the tunnel, as fast as humanly possible, smashing our knees and shins against the sharp cement edges, that lined the path to the ladder by which we had entered."
The team was afraid the manhole cover would be closed when they returned to the other side, according to the explorer.
But, fortunately for them, they were able to get out of the corridor this time.
An old milk carton, full of what was described as human waste, was pushed into the corner. Near the entryway, there was a bung of rope. This may have been there in case of an emergency, according to the explorers.
