Today, CVS is the biggest pharmacy chain in the United States based on the number of locations, boasting an impressive 9,674 stores nationwide as of the end of 2022. But when the company first launched on May 8, 1963, it wasn’t just called CVS. It had a longer, original name—one that has faded from most people’s memories over time.

Back when CVS Pharmacy first opened its doors, it wasn’t known by its well-recognized three-letter name. Instead, it went by the full name Consumer Value Store.
Just a year later, in 1964, the company decided to shorten its name to CVS. Over time, this abbreviation became the name most people associate with the pharmacy today.
A TikTok video posted by creator Nisa (@nisipisa) shed light on this surprising fact as she casually explained to her followers: "I got this dry mouth spray from 'Consumer Value Stores', and the experience of using it is kind of, like, someone who's in the middle of chewing gum is spitting into your mouth."

After the revelation spread, people quickly flooded the comments with jokes and reactions.
One confused TikToker couldn’t believe it and asked: "Consumer Value Stores ?!!?"
Another shocked commenter responded: "She did not deadname cvs."
A third person humorously pointed out: "The casual use of CVS' government name."
Another added: "The government name was so unnecessary but so funny."

Interestingly, CVS isn’t the only well-known brand with an acronym that surprises shoppers. Another brand that has left many people stunned is M&M.
While most recognize M&M’s as a beloved chocolate candy, few actually know what the name stands for. Created in 1941, M&M actually represents two names: 'Mars' and 'Murrie'.
The two letters in M&M come from the names of its founders—Forrest E. Mars Sr. and Bruce Murrie, who played a significant role in launching the popular chocolate brand.
