The Surprising Reason Why Men’s Boxers Have A Hole In The Front

Some people are just now realizing the actual purpose of the hole in men's boxers.

No, we're not talking about the accidental holes that appear after years of refusing to buy a new pair. This is about the small, deliberate opening in the front of many boxer shorts.

Boxers have been around for more than a century. They were first introduced by Jacob Golomb, the founder of the sportswear brand Everlast, back in 1925.

Despite being a wardrobe staple for many men, there’s still some confusion surrounding the design of these undergarments.

If you wear boxers, you’ve probably noticed the little flap or opening in the front. While some men never actually use it, others swear by its convenience.

Because so many guys just pull their waistband down when they use the restroom, people have started questioning why this hole even exists.

To put the mystery to rest, Sheath Underwear provided a straightforward explanation.

"From penis holes, air holes, and pee holes, there are many names for the hole in the front of your boxer shorts," the company wrote on its website in 2021.

"Others call them Y-holes. Even some would just simply call those holes… holes. There is a true name, however. Just like what we call the holes on our pants, the hole in your boxers is also called a fly."

Apparently a lot of men just lift their manhood over their waistband Getty Stock

So, what is this so-called "fly" actually meant for? If you've ever heard it referred to as a "pee hole," that should give you a pretty clear idea.

"The purpose of the fly is to make it easier for you to pee while wearing boxers," Sheath explained.

"Only about 20 percent of males who wear boxers actually use the hole in their boxers and would rather pull them down and take out their member when using the restroom. The fly makes it more convenient to urinate in a public restroom, even though only 20 percent actually use the holes."

Despite its intended purpose, a lot of men don’t bother using the fly at all. Instead, they opt for what they feel is the simpler method—pulling their waistband down.

Curious about what most guys prefer, one Reddit user started a discussion to get to the bottom of it.

In a Reddit thread that sparked plenty of debate, one person posed the question: "Do you use the hole in your boxers or briefs, or do you pull the waist band below your junk when you pee?"

One user weighed in: "Does it not just depend on your outfit? If I'm at home in pajama pants or basketball shorts, just flip it over the waistband. If I'm at work with a dress shirt and pants and a belt, I go through the hole."

Another shared their preference: "I pull the waist band down. Always seemed easier and less awkward than trying to use that hole,"

Yet another person chimed in: "I've always been an over guy no matter how many layers I'm wearing."

At the end of the day, it seems like this is just one of those things where personal preference wins!
