Hailey Welch had no idea how many people would end up hearing her now-iconic phrase.
'Hawk Tuah' — if you know, you know. And by now, most of us probably do.
If you haven't stumbled upon the phrase 'hawk tuah' lately, let me clarify that it's not about a newly discovered species of hawk.
This term sprang from a woman named Hailey Welch, who has affectionately become known as the 'hawk tuah girl.'
She shot to internet fame on TikTok after being asked in a video, "What's one move in bed that makes a man go crazy every time?"

The question was part of a street interview conducted by the creators Tim & Dee TV.
Welch, standing with friends and ready to share her insight, mimicked the action of gathering spit and confidently replied:
"You gotta give 'em that 'hawk tuah' and spit on that thing, you get me?"
Her response left her friend in stitches, and she wasn’t the only one laughing.
The clip has racked up millions of views since it was first posted on June 11, quickly establishing Welch as the world’s newest meme sensation.

One user on X anticipated the viral wave, commenting: "Brace yourselves everyone. Within the next week the Hawk Tuah meme will finally make its way to Facebook and we'll have to explain to our parents and grandparents what it means. Just be ready."
As predicted, just a few weeks after the video’s release, Welch began capitalizing on her viral fame by selling merchandise inspired by her now-famous meme.
Welch partnered with Fathead Threads, a family-operated business in Marshall County, Tennessee, run by Jason Poteete, who has known Welch for years.
After her sudden rise to internet fame, Poteete reached out to help transform her viral moment into a profitable venture.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Poteete explained: "Of course she hasn't gotten a dime from the first viral video that went out.
"Nobody was asking permission for her to do nothing, neither. I just wanted her to get some profit off of this deal."
He shared that Welch has now got herself an agent and has consulted with a lawyer to trademark the phrase 'hawk tuah', though she instructed Poteete not to use her face on any of the merchandise.
Currently, Fathead Threads is exclusively selling hats that feature "Hawk Tuah '24" on them, priced at $32.78 each, with autographed versions available for $50.

Poteete estimated that the store has sold just over 2,000 hats so far, bringing in an estimated $65,000.
"Our largest orders are usually 100 hats, maybe 150-250 shirts. This is way out of the normal for us," he mentioned.
"This is a small family-owned shop. We're all-hands-on-deck right now."
Reflecting on the impact of Welch’s video, Poteete remarked: "I just think the world needed a laugh, and she provided that."
